#0001 Mule Deer & Desert Ironwood Drop Point
Numero Uno. When I made the announcement establishing Cunningham Custom Shop, it was one of my dearest friends, Bradley, that quickly requested the first thing I make. He sent me a mule deer antler from a buck he had shot for the handle and the rest was up to me. I’ve always preferred drop point blade shapes to any other, so I hand forged this bad boy from 1075 high carbon spring steel. The blade measures 4 1/4” and features a three dimensional hybrid convex grind- an attempt at Michael Price’s concept from the late 1800’s.
The blade is multiple quenched and heat treated to a Rockwell of about 59. I chip tested the both sides of the edge on solid brass, cut a few inches of Manila rope and chopped hard on a railroad tie with no damage or edge loss. Then the brass guard is tightly fitted before I bullet-peen the back of it to the tang… and then soldered in place. Solid as a rock.
The handle is fitted with desert ironwood and gray fiber spacers. The fit warms up your hand like a glove when you touch it. Overall length measures 9 3/4” and it comes in a custom made pouch by yours truly.
Blade is engraved with my GC maker mark, #0001 (as requested by Bradley) and the sheath features my Jolly Cunninghammer stamp.
