Axis Stag Scagel Drop Point
One of the great pioneers of the American fixed-blade is William Scagel (1873-1963). He made knives in many fashions but is best known for his arrays of leather stacked handles with accents of vulcanized fibers, and metals like copper or aluminum. This new Drop Point from the Cunningham Custom Shop features a Scagel-inspired stack of a copper guard over black, maroon white and gray fiber with six winter hide leather spacers with a Hawaiian Axis crotch stag butt that fills the hand like a glove. My blade is forged to shape from a John Deere load control shaft (5160 spring steel) and it measures 3 1/2" from tip to guard with a razor sharp convex grind. The extended ricasso reinforces the blade construction in the case of a "prying-necessity-disaster" but also lends a sweet spot for a confident and choked up grip. See THE PROCESS page for more info, including heat treat details. Overall length measures 8 3/8" and it comes in one of my hand-stitched pouch sheaths like the one shown. I guarantee these materials and craftsmanship for life.
