Vintage Micarta and Willow Bow Sheep Drop Point
Oh yes, we DO love a beefy drop point! I forged this baddie from 5160 spring steel and it measures about 3 3/4” from tip to guard. I’ve been practicing Michael Price’s hybrid three dimensional convex grinds from the late 1800’s. It’s not entirely there yet, but the knife ripped through Manila rope like butter and actually bit me a few times throughout the build.
Usually 5160 gets three quenches, but reading the temper lines it was clear I needed to draw the heat deeper into the ricasso. That earlier temper is still visible, but if you look closely you’ll see this one received five dips. I’ve been assured by my mentors that this is only makes a knife stronger, so long as the blade is not overheated in the process.
The brass guard is bullet-peened to the tang and solder in place from under. Way stronger than it’ll ever need to be.
Spacers consist of some horsehide, gray fiber and sheep horn while the handle is repurposed vintage linen micarta in my favorite color. 8 1/4” overall length.
I made this one with a no-belt-loop pack style sheath. Blade is engraved with my GC maker mark and the sheath is stamped with the Jolly Cunninghammer. Comes with a zipper case marked "G. Cunningham Handmade First 10" and shipping is free.
